Embracing Life’s Unexpected Twists: Lessons from My Journey
What are you going to do to celebrate?
This woman’s innocent question caught me off guard. Celebrate? I thought to myself. Writing my book was the most rewarding and cathartic experience I’ve ever had and achieved. And now I was about to do one of the scariest and bravest things I could have imagined—publishing my book. My story, all the lies, shame, and secrets I’d carried around with me my whole life, letting them define who I was based on what had happened to me, would be out in the open. I was a prisoner, held captive by my own thoughts, beliefs, and identity defined by my past, others, and the negative beliefs I had held and spoken to and about myself. Setting myself free from this self-made prison was the gift I had given myself, and that was my “celebration.” I didn’t need a party or others to validate my journey. The freedom I got to experience through the grace of God was my true celebration.
I now had a fresh start, a new beginning, and a promise I’d made to myself, and I vowed to God to help others do the same—to let go of limiting beliefs, redefine who you are, and create a new story. With the help of the Creator of life itself, I’d given my life to Christ and have continued to build on the good works He’s already begun. It’s an amazing gift that keeps on giving; the work is never finished, and each year, I am reminded of how far I’ve come but also of how much more work we’ve still got left to do. My book, “Chasing Perfection,” helped me reclaim my power and rewrite a new narrative and story for myself that God is perfecting each day.
The thought of “celebrating” hadn’t even entered my mind. And while I tell myself I am a recovering perfectionist, former people pleaser, and a high-achiever––perfectionists perfect, people pleasers please, and high-achievers overachieve. This was who I was, and while this identity serves me most times, it’s not who I am—it’s a part of who I am, allowing me to redefine and become who God has created me to be—perfectly imperfect, flawed, scared, broken, and fixed. The life lessons I’ve learned throughout my journey to healing, fitness, and self-love are invaluable, and today, on my birthday, I want to share these lessons with you.
Embrace Vulnerability
Years ago, after hitting rock bottom, I was overwhelmed, burnt out, and felt like I was losing myself. My identity was so tightly woven with my productivity and achievements that when I faltered, I felt like I was falling apart. It was during this dark time that I turned to God and sought guidance from mentors, coaches, and doctors. One of my mentors, seeing potential I couldn’t see in myself, predicted that I would write a book one day. This planted a seed of hope and purpose in me. Embracing vulnerability has been a cornerstone of my healing. It’s okay to admit when you’re struggling. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Through vulnerability, we find connection and support. It was through admitting my struggles and seeking help that I found the strength to write and share my story.
2 Corinthians 12:9-10:
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
Trust the Process
Fast forward to today, I reflect on the journey of writing and publishing my book, “Chasing Perfection: A Journey to Healing, Fitness, and Self-Love.” It wasn’t an easy path. I faced resistance, fear, and even advice to delay my dreams due to the pandemic. But I persevered, driven by a deeper calling to share my story and help others. The book became a #1 new release and best seller, winning multiple awards and touching the lives of thousands of women. This journey taught me that life’s unexpected twists, even the painful ones, can lead to profound growth and unexpected blessings. Trust the process, even when things don’t go as planned. There is a greater purpose at work. Every setback is a setup for a comeback.
Isaiah 55:8-9:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Celebrate Small Wins
As an achiever, I often overlooked the small victories in pursuit of larger goals. However, I’ve learned that each step forward, no matter how small, is progress. Celebrate your efforts and victories, and let them fuel your journey. Each small win is a testament to your perseverance and dedication. Celebrating these moments not only boosts your motivation but also reinforces a positive mindset. It’s important to acknowledge and appreciate the small steps that contribute to your overall growth and success.
Psalm 95:2:
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
Live with Intention
Align your actions with your values and purpose. When you live intentionally, every moment becomes meaningful. Living with intention means making conscious choices that reflect your true self and aspirations. It’s about being present in each moment and making decisions that align with your core values. By living with intention, you create a life that is authentic and fulfilling. This intentionality has been a guiding principle in my journey, helping me stay true to my mission of empowering others.
Matthew 6:33:
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Practice Gratitude
Gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have. It’s a powerful tool that transforms our perspective and brings joy into our lives. Practicing gratitude has been a transformative practice in my life. It has helped me appreciate the blessings and opportunities that come my way, no matter how small. Gratitude opens our hearts to joy and contentment, fostering a positive outlook on life. It reminds us of the beauty and abundance that surround us, even in challenging times.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18:
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
Scripture for the Soul
As I celebrate another year of life, I am reminded of Psalm 37:4:
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” This scripture resonates deeply with me, as it encapsulates the essence of my journey. By delighting in the Lord and trusting His plan, I have found the strength and courage to pursue my dreams and embrace life’s unexpected twists. It’s a reminder that our desires and aspirations are aligned with God’s purpose when we find joy and contentment in Him.
As I blow out the candles on my birthday cake today, I am grateful for the journey so far and excited for the chapters yet to be written. To everyone reading this, remember that your story is unique and powerful. Embrace the twists, trust the process, and always, always lead with an attitude of gratitude.
Here’s to another year of growth, love, and unshakeable confidence in the beauty of this life and faith journey.
