Beyond the Hustle: Finding True Freedom in God’s Purpose
Have you ever felt the pressure to produce and perform, to hustle your way to achievements and success, only to find yourself burned out, tired, exhausted, and drained? In a world that constantly demands more, bigger, and better, it’s easy to lose sight of who we truly are.
So much of our worth, identity, and value comes from what we do and have. But who are we in the midst of it all? Who are we without all these “expectations,” the worldly standards of who is deemed worthy, valuable, and successful?
Society often fixates on “BIG” – big dreams, big goals, big bank accounts—a big life. We’re told to “Go BIG.” But what if bigger isn’t always better? What if, in our pursuit of the next big thing, we’ve lost touch with who we are and the big God we serve?
I was recently asked, “Got any big plans for the month?” My response was simple: finding joy in the simple moments of daily life. This exchange made me reflect on our societal obsession with “big” and how it affects our well-being and spiritual life.
Don’t get me wrong – there’s nothing inherently wrong with “BIG.” But when “BIG” becomes the epicenter of all we do and have, we risk losing our true selves and overlooking the blessings in each season of life. I’m guilty of going “too big” to where I’ve gotten lost—in the mix and lost within.
In taking the “less is more approach,” I’m currently in a season of slow, rest, and less – and let me tell you, this pace has brought me so much more than “Big” ever could: more awareness, presence, peace, stillness, gratitude, love, contentment, appreciation, clarity, community, and connection.
If I had to guess, you’re much like me in what you ultimately long for and desire. Beyond the big dreams and goals, what we’re really after is freedom—freedom to be, do, and have whatever sets our hearts on fire, but in alignment with the will and plans that the Lord has created for us. This freedom isn’t about chasing worldly success; it’s about the liberty to fully embrace our God-given purpose and find contentment in every season of life.
Scripture for the Soul: “I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little.” – Philippians 4:11-12
Points to Ponder:
- Is what you’re working towards achievable, sustainable, and ultimately fulfilling?
- Are your dreams and goals aligned with God’s purpose for your life?
- In pursuing “BIG,” are you neglecting the simple joys and blessings of your current season?
Remember, we are human beings, not human doers. Our worth isn’t determined by our output or achievements. As Paul reminds us in Philippians 4:13, “I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” Our true strength and contentment come from relying on God, not our own efforts.
In this season, to avoid burnout and maintain your joy, confidence, and identity, focus on what truly matters. Heed Paul’s advice in Philippians 4:6-7: “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.”
Let’s move beyond the hustle mentality and find peace in God’s abundant grace, regardless of our circumstances. Trust that, as Paul says in Philippians 4:19, “this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.”
